Update 21/12/12

Well this is likely going to be the last update of the year, and also an announcement of the last video of the year,

Daze Before Christmas.

Since Christmas is almost upon us, and I was pretty bored, I decided to make quite a short review. Of course it's a christmas game, A side scrolling platformer, and you play as Santa, The video will be up, probably by tomorrow (22/12/12)

 Prototype 2

Darksiders 2

Of course, just because of the retro review partnership, On top of the reviews mentioned in the last video, I also have two other planned, I've not stopped reviewing newer games. These is likely the next video reviews, but won't be up until the new year. I've yet to play either of them, but I did enjoy the first prototype for a while, until later in the game. I spoil too much of my opinion of that, we'll wait until the review, to talk more on that. As for the original darksiders, I always struggled to really get in to it.

Thanks for reading, and I hope you all have a great Christmas

Desert Bus Simulator, 8 hour challenge.

Ok, I think this may amuse a lot of viewers, if any of you read this. But if you view this video. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qTm4MqfARw4&lcor=1&feature=em-comment_reply_received&lch=email_reply&lc=SgJrIJZugCQJo-9_6nnV1M03bLFqN0hCGFNKGFGQjTA Stan Burdmans review of some crappy desert bus sim game, I drunkenly, and openly accepted his challenge to play this monstrosity for 8 bloody hours. This was certainly not my finest hour, I could have done better. ie not accepting this. But we shall see. Either way, expect a video when I'm done putting it off. What better way to spend Christmas eh? Expect cursing and anger, although its more than likely just going to be utter boredom soon. I'll have to think of a way of authenticating it though with the footage and such... To see how long I can actually put up with it :)

News 17/12/2012

It's been a while since I've written one of these. I have tonnes of news regarding the channel, and the future. So let's get right in to it.

Retrogamereviews.co.uk partnership

I'd like to officially announce, a partnership with with Retro Game Reviews. They're a website dedicated to reviewing retro video games. Of course, name pretty much speaks for its self, and were looking to move in to doing video reviews.  I sent them an email, suggesting the partnership, and we partnered with them, to help supply video reviews for their vastly growing site. It helps everyone out really. Them with video reviews, us with a new audience... SO HURRAY FOR ALL!

NEW DESIGN

I'm sure by now, you've notice that I've totally re-branded the channel. I'd like to thank Matt at Retro Game Reviews for providing the new logos, and further giving me inspiration to create other things out of them, such as the background. I'm not going to go as far as re-branding the old videos, that would be too much work, and I'd rather concentrate on the future.

Upcoming reviews

Today I finished the first video under the... newness It's The Story Of Thor. A game I talked abotu a while ago on the top 10 mega drive video. Check it out here.  http://youtu.be/g4NLKdIM0E4

I have a few retro reviews in mind at the moment. Including Resident Evil 2, Die Hard Trilogy, and a NES, or SNES Mario game. Of course this new partnership doesn't mean that we won't be reviewing newer games anymore. Prototype 2, and the Darkness 2 are both on the cards, and should be up within the next few weeks.

As always thanks for reading, and don't forget to checkout www.Retrogamereviews.co.uk

Rating System Explained

I've been getting a few messages of late from viewers asking why I give such low scores "this game doesn't deserve this blah blah blah"

Let me explain. I'm not IGN, Gamespot, or some large magazine, with advertising deals and sponsors to upset. I know gamers have become accustomed to games that are absolute crap, unless it scores atleast 7, and if it's atleast slightly decent scores at least 8., and actually worth buying (or its advertised all over the site scores 9, or 10.

But that's not how it works with me. I see less than 5 being a negative score, ie I didn't enjoy it. 5 being absolutely average, it wasn't a bad game at all (if you notice, quite a few games are scoring around here. above 5 being a positive score, if it got more than 5 I liked it quite a lot. Games that score 8 and 9 are very special games. To put it in to perspective  Grand Theft auto and the Elder Scrolls games are my two favourite game series. Skyrim, possibly the best game I've played would probably just about score 9. GTA San Andreas, and GTA 4, would also get around 8.5/9 So anything that's scoring 7, I like quite a lot. 8 is an absolutely stunning game to me.But I'm not starting the .2 and .3 shit I can't be bothered. )

It's unlikely any game will ever score 10. That would be a game that would have absolutely no negative aspects. Does such a game exist? No it doesn't.

So to sum it up

0/10 Likely won't happen, not many games have no redeeming features at all But any game that scores this. Even My Hero, which was my most hated game of all time, gets more than this... not much though.

1/10 Bloody awful, complete waste of plastic, ink, paper, and ware on your console/computer, and TV no one could possibly enjoy this apart from the clinically insane.

2/10 It might have some appeal to big fans of the genre, not many admittedly, but I absolutely couldn't stand it, and couldn't take it, I've defecated more enjoyable things than this MAKE IT STOP!

3/10 ehhh what happened!? Why did you do this to us!? You could have had something here, then screwed it all up, and instead ended up with dog vomit. IDIOTS!!!

4/10 It's playable... not enjoyable, probably a total borefest I didn't find much enjoyment from it, I probably stopped playing quite early on, but whatever, you might like it, if you like the genre.

5/10 Absolutely down the line average. These are the types of games that don't particularly do anything too badly, but likely have no originality whatsoever, probably a bit of a borefest at times, but not unpleasant, and perfectly playable.

6/10 not bad, pretty damn good in fact  not great, let's not get carried away here, but it's definitely a pretty. solid game. Just has a few niggles that stops it being great.

7/10 WOW! Now we're talking. Games that score 7 are great games, not quite genre defining, there's likely better games in the genre... not many, but if you like the genre you have to play it.

8/10 One word. AWESOME! PLAY IT!, WHY YOU NOT PLAYING IT? PLAY IT NOW!!!

9/10 How could such a game be possible, how could mere men have created this? SIR's You are not men... you must be gods!

10/10 Perfect, absolutely no faults, not even the tiniest of fault, nothing could ever improve on it. This is the pinnacle of gaming. It's a sad day for us all, because nothing will be better than this, anything else will seem hollow afterwards.

Anything that scores .5 is just simply better than the lower score, but not quite good enough for the higher one.

Thanks for reading. Hope I cleared that up a little

Update 02/11/12

Well the Silent hill video is up, what a pile of crap that was, but nevermind moving on!

Upcoming videos

Assassins Creed Revelations.

This is one I've actually owned for ages, and couldn't really be bothered to play, I've been a little burned out on the series. But before I play Assassins Creed 3, I want to play this one, so this is probably going to be the next video

Uncharted 3

Of course, I've already mentioned this one in previous posts. I know I said, it was going to be the next modern game, but I had a change of plan. I've spent a small amount of time with this game so far, it's been quite impressive. I'll have a full lowdown soon enough

The Amazing Spider Man

This one, I like the look of a lot, not played it yet though, it also looks a lot of fun on move. Shame I don't have move. But we'll see just how amazing it is soon enough.

Classic Review

Before those two though, I'm likely going to make a classic review, I still have wonder boy 3 for the master system in mind for this. I used to adore that game as a child, and can't wait to get my teeth in to it again!

I'll also be working on movie reviews during this time, I have a few in mind to start making soon. But until I'm sure, I'll keep that information close to my chest.

Thanks for reading.

=Onion

COMING SOON

I'm proud to introduce a new segment, maybe even its own channel, Onion's movie corner. . I've been wanting to do movie reviews for a while, but not really been sure of the best way to go about them. With a little bit of experimentation, I think I finally cracked it  The reviews will be kept very short and to the point, there may also be other types of videos. I still have a lot of work to do on it, but the videos should be more regular, and in a much more comedic style, than the ones on game corner. It also gives me something else to do, and think about. Stay tuned for more information coming soon!

Update 27/10/12

Well The Dishonored review, and battlefield 3 reviews are up you can watch them off the bar at the side of this blog >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

Silent Hill Downpour

This is likely going to be the next review. I've not played a Silent Hill game, since the second one on ps2, so I've missed out an awful lot on the series. I spent a few hours with it last night. While it's definitley moody and atpmospheric, there is a few little problems. Such as the lack of a decent fighting system, and it can be very slow at times. I'll give a full low down in the next week or two,

Retro Reviews

I'm going to start making a few more retro reviews after this one, as the retro videos seem to be the most popular, and where I pick up the most subscribers. A few games I have in mind are: Wonder Boy 3 for the master system. Story of thor, for the Mega Drive, and possibly streets of rage, also for the mega drive. If anyone has anything they'd like me to review, let me know, and I'll do my best to review it.

Uncharted 3: Drakes Deception.

This is going to be the next modern game. I've not actually played it yet, but love the uncharted games. so we'll be reviewing this soon.

Update 17/10/12

I've decided to just upload the sega classics collection review. It's encoding as I type this. The new format show is still in the works, but may not be ready for a few months, since there's a lot to sort out, organise, and persuasion, to be done to get people to help out. It's going to be far too much work for one person, with what I have planned, a team of a few people would be needed really. For now, I'll just continue to do the usual reviews, and will try to make them a little more entertaining.

The next review will be Dishonored, for the PS3. I've been spending quite a bit of time with this, so far so good. Although in parts it's pretty frustrating. Expect a review of this within the next week, maybe two. After I've gotten my claws stuck in to it, and given it a proper playthrough. In the meantime I may review the other game that was meant to be on the first episode of the new format. Wonderboy 3 for the Sega Master System.

Some other reviews coming up are Silent hill downpour, and Battlefield 3 single player.

Update 07/10/12

First of all, I would like to say a big thanks to all those who have subscribed to us, and been reading the blog.

I know we've not released a video for a while, I've been busy trying to start a business.

The sega classics collection is officially scrapped as a review, this decision was made actually today, around half an hour ago, as I was far from happy with what I had.

I'll be quite honest, I've not been happy with what I've been putting out lately. Especially the last review, that driver SF review, while informative was immensely boring, more like the kind of thing you'd find on IGN, or some of the more boring nerdy channels. The main purpose of this channel, when I first set it up was to be entertaining, and informative, and more importantly good. I dislike my reviews my self for the most part, so how can anyone else possibly like them?

So I've been talking to the "new reviewer" who is yet unnamed or made any videos, but he does exist PROMISE! The format of the show is completely changing. To a monthly, perhaps 2 a month half hour(ish) magazine (Top Gear) style show... but with a much tinier budget.. of course. We'll be detailing different games, and have different sections of the show, including news, or more appropriately giving our opinion of recent gaming news, and of course mocking things, that's been going on int he gaming world. New releases of the month that we've played, Talking about random games we've been playing, this can be anything to the later ps3 games to NES games. and giving quick opinons of those, There will also be 1 review of a modern, hopefully newly released game, a retro game review, some other retro gaming related guff, and from time to time a special feature. Things like "gaming legends" and "grandtheftathon" will likely appear here. "Onion plays" will still be there own videos, although a lot more effort will be put in to them from now on.

But I feel the game reviews are too long and boring, and feel I have a lot more to talk about around the whole gaming industry, and community than simple game reviews that everyone else is doing, and in a lot of cases better than me. Of course we'll still be reviewing them, just not going in to as much boring detail as we have been. They'll likely be restricted to around 5 - 6 minutes. Most games will get a quick mention, a few jokes made out of it and then We'll move on to the next section. I'm hoping this will mean the videos will flow better, and be far more entertaining to watch. I'll also be giving my self much longer to work on them.

As for the details of the first episode, I've been hard at work today thinking of things, and doing much typing. I can confirm a few things, that will appear in the first episode. Firstly the classic game review will be Wonder Boy 3: The dragons Trap For the master system, and the sega classics collection review, that I've been working on for the last few weeks will also be consolidated in to the random games I want to talk about section, only much shorter, and much more to the point of course.

I'm also hoping I can get hold of a copy of F1 2012 (budget allowing) This will be the subject of the modern review, if not I'll have to find something else. We'll also be talking about the Wii u, and the Super Slim PS3 in the news section. I'll give much more information when everything is finalised, and filming and capturing of game footage starts. I'm not sure yet if we'll appear on camera, since we don't have a camcorder, but It's likely the only way we're going to pull it all together. Thanks for reading

Update: 29/09/12

It's been a little while since I've posted anything, or done much with the channel lately. Don't worry I've not abandoned it entirely. Just decided to have a little break, since running a you tube channel can be quite stressful at times. Here's what's coming up in the next few weeks.

Sega Classics Collection

This is the next video in the works. I've already mentioned of my intentions of doing this in previous posts, well I'm actually going through the process now (playing it, writing a review etc) of turning it in to a real video. For those who don't know what it is, here's what the blurb on the back of the box says.
"GAMING THAT DEFINED A GENERATION RETURNS!"

"A compilation of unforgettable gaming history, that lets you experience the thrill and excitement of Sega titles that changed the world of video games! Previously only available on Sega Mega Drive, Arcade or Sega Master System. Now you can enjoy these classics with enhanced graphics and sound for a superior gameplay experience. Get ready to relive some of the best moments in gaming history again and again!"

. Oh boy! Doesn't that sound amazing! GEE GOLLYS I CANT WAIT!!!... No really... yeah I've already spent some time with this, before writing this blog, the sarcasm is a good indication of where this one is headed.

Gaming legends: The Prince of Persia

I'm proud to present a new series of videos "Gaming legends" In this series we'll be taking a look at some of gamings greatest series. To qualify for this it must have started in at least the 1990's, and still be going today, and above all be very popular indeed. It also helps if I like the series as a whole, to be bothered to spend so much time on it. Later episodes of this will likely include games such as Tomb Raider, Metal Gear, Elder Scrolls, Final Fantasy, Resident Evil, Sonic (possibly... only because some of my subscribers are huge sega fans), and who knows what else. This will not include throw away games though, such as sports games, and games that have had a new instalment every year since 1982. They have to be highly regarded by gamers and critics alike to qualify for this. Of course most of these large franchises that have been going forever, they do have bad games in the series, even the first one, Prince of Persia is no exception. These of course will be brought up and ripped in to during the videos.

This actually developed from me wanting to review sands of time, and the whole idea got bigger and bigger, to what it now is.  While I'll try to include most games in each series. I, (of course) can only actually talk about games I have access to. Ones I can either emulate, or I have the actual console that it was brought out on. This will exclude mainly handheld games, since I've never been in to handheld gaming, and games released on obscure consoles nobody bought, and are difficult to emulate. But, I'll be the judge of what I consider great, unlike some reviewers who just talk about something they've either never played, or not played for like 20 years. My creative process is quite different. I want a fresh idea of what the game is like in my head before I talk about it, Also all footage of games, is what I've created. So I won't be making any videos with the best games missing. If that's the case it simply won't get made.

That's really all the news I have for now. I'm going to work on some videos now. Thanks for reading

Update 05/07/2012

Removal/Editing of copyrighted video's

As I've already quickly touched upon on the channel feed, I've taken the decision to remove copyrighted material, since we're trying to establish ourselves as a gaming channel on you tube. This decision hasn't come lightly. Many of those videos took over a week to complete, and are some of our most viewed videos. Video's I could save, such as golvellius, and the Race Driver Grid video, I had to edit when the copyright crap first came up, Have just had the intro/outro chopped off. However, Assassins Creed, and Road Rash 64, have had to be removed entirely (or at least made private). I feel this will be beneficial in the end for the channel, as if the day ever came that you tube offer us partnership, we won't have that going against us. I know that's a very long way off, and a lot of work needs to be done before achieving this, especially since it's so incredibly hard to even get noticed by the community, with so many other far more established channels out there.

Driver San Francisco

This review is now coming along nicely since the last post, I have many hours of game play footage, and the scripts first draft is almost complete. It's definitely on track to be up by the weekend, so stay posted for this

Onion Play's

I've not released one of these for a few weeks. I removed the GTA 4 one. It was more of a test of my PVR, and also, you could barely hear my voice, as I didn't play it back before I uploaded it, I may be doing one later this week, of what, though. I'm not sure yet. I may redo the GTA one.

Grumpy Old Man's Guide To Gaming In A Recession.

Having been discussing a lot of things with the new reviewer, I mentioned in a previous post, I'm pleased to announce a new segment. I'm sure many of us are feeling the credit crunch/recession, and had a major impact, perhaps you've taken less hours, or like me, out of work entirely, and can't afford to go throwing all your money at the latest release, in the hopes it's good and will help kill some of that spare time. Well fear not, there's another way. How these are going to work, is he's going to be comparing budget/cheap games. We discussed,a lot of details, but we'll be looking at games that cost no more than £5, or essentially 2 pints of beer.. A lot of these will be older titles, for PS1, PS2. Xbox. Gamecube, etc. Of course, anything we can find on the newer systems, for that price he'll also cover. In each video, he'll be comparing 3 similar games and deciding which is the best, and if you should buy any of them, or if you'd get far more from 2 pints of beer.

Top 20 PS1 Games

The script for this is now complete, I however have one or two tiny issues, mostly relating to acquiring all the games for game play footage. I obviously no longer own most of the games on this countdown, I wish I did they're all excellent games. But we're operating on a very tiny budget, preferably no budget at all if we can help it. My first thought was to turn to an emulator. But PS1 certain games just don't work on emulators, or are a massive hassle to get working. While some games only cost a few pounds, others are pretty expensive, I would like to go in to specifics, but that will be giving too much away. So this video may have to be put back further than I would have liked. I also don't like using emulators if I can avoid it, as they tend to show the game in a better light than it really is. I've always been very adamant, I'll never make a game look better than it does. Some people will add effects, and such when editing to make the game look more colourful or whatever. I'm not here to sell the game, I'm here to criticize if it sucks, or praise it if its good. I may just have to  acquire each game on the countdown slowly

Sega Classics Collection

This may be the next review, it may be the one after it, who knows just yet. But I almost creamed my self when I saw this, and at the price I saw it at,I immediately bought it with out delay. If someone would have told me about this, I would have given them a blank cheque and told them to write any amount down because it will be worth it! It has Some of my favourite Sega games re-imagined, on my second favourite video game console, I loved this before I ever played it... err.. yeah.... This is why channels like us are here.

That's all for now. I'll make another one of these when I have something to share

-Onion

.

Update Next upcoming video's/ future plans

Well it's been about a week since I last posted one of these, a lot as happened since then, and a lot of new plans have been made regarding the channel.

First up. The buffy the vampire slayer review is finished, and can be found here once its completed uploading http://youtu.be/JXsiyBHZH40. It's in quite a different style to my usual reviews, it's also a little longer. But I believe this is probably one of, if not the best video I've made so far. All future reviews (until I find a better style I'm comfortable with) will be in this style.

My new PVR as obviously finally arrived, and has been used to record the buffy footage. So this means a lot more console games, infact mostly console games. As the new videos are uploaded, I may start to take the older ones down.

Secondly, a new reviewer as joined our ranks. He'll simply be known as "angry old man". His first video, comparison of playstation era first person shooters, should be up in a couple of weeks, since we have to acquire the games first. he may do a gameplay video of something before then though.

Ok future video plans from me now.

Driver San Francisco

This is a game I've been wanting to review for absolutely ages. So therefore will be the next major video. I was a huge fan of the driver series on the playstation. But totally lost interest, after Driv3r, since it was such a huge disappointment. So what do I think of this one? Find out soon!

Top 20 Playstation Games

This is a project that's grown since the last post. It's gone from top 10, to top 20. Because, I found my self simply leaving too many games out that I wanted to talk about. I've already finalised the countdown, and I've started to write the script. It may still take a few weeks to get around to actually turning what, at the moment is a word document in to a fully fledged video though. I keep going back to it in little chunks, and playing some more of the games. At the moment I have quite a few projects on my mind, that I'd rather do first.

Other ideas. In the next few months I also intend to purchase a camcorder, and start to show my self, and present it more like a show. This will also allow me to do other game related videos, such as hardware videos, and maybe certain tutorials such as, how to start a game channel your self, and document the work that also goes in to making some of these videos. I also may start renting games soon, to review. This will allow me to broaden my scope a lot, of what types of games I'm able to review. For example I'd love to review The London 2012 Olympics game, Golden Axe Rider, game of thrones, other abominations. But I don't feel like actually spending real money paying for them, It will also allow me to review a lot more newer, decent games, that I normally wouldn't have the capital to go out buy.
This is going to be put on hold for a little while. It's a project I feel strongly about. I also feel I'm improving my style and ability to edit and produce videos with every one I make. So for that reason, I'd like to get more practice using the tools at my disposal, messing with video formats, and also more importantly getting better at voice overs. As I've already stated on other sources, this series isn't a simple review, and is going to be a much more in depth project on the whole franchise. It's still very much alive, I just don't think the time is right just yet.

I may also start writing some articles on here if I have time. Such as first impressions, of games I've played and anything else I feel appropriate. But right now, the you tube channel is my biggest priority, and this is more a way to keep people who are interested informed of what's going on behind the scenes.

So that's all the news I have right now for you

-Onion

UPDATE: Upcoming Videos

So the last week or so I've been working extra hard on a few videos and I have one almost ready to go, We'll list them here.

Next Release: My Hero
Sega Master System

This is something, I've been wanting to do a review for for a while, it's such an awful game the comedy value is pretty high for it. This video is almost finished, I have all the footage I need/can stand to get, and the script is written. I just need to record the voice over, and put it all together. I'd say it should be up in the next day or 2

WIP - Pending a PVR
Buffy The Vampire Slayer - Chaos Bleeds - Xbox

I didn't even realise I owned this game, this is in fairly early stages, I've started to play it and take down notes, and I have a wip script, which obviously can't be finished until I finish the game. This will be finished off as soon as I have a way to capture the footage
This is a project that's going to take a while to complete, I have the script for the first episode, or atleast the first 2 games more or less ready, but again, any further production is being hampered by lack of suitable capture device, which I should be able to buy this week.

This is going to be a pretty long, ambitious project, and is going to cover almost all the gta games from the first up to gta 4. It will be in a different style to my usual reviews, and will be more of a documentary, It's also going to have much higher production than most of my videos. It even has its own logo as you can see above. I don't know how long each episode will be. It may be 1 episode per game. Or I may do 2 or 3 games per episode. I'm not sure yet,  But look out for that in the near future.

Top 10 Sony Playstation Games

A lot of people seemed to like my last top 10 Videos, so I'm in the very early stages of producing this. All I really have right now is a list of candidates. Some of which I'm going to have to buy to be able to play, and decide what goes where. This one is definitely a few weeks away. But it's coming, and soon.

Here's the current list of candidates. If you can think of anything I've missed. apart from the obvious such as Spyro Gran Turismo Etc, which I've left off on purpose, drop me a comment.

tomb raider
Resident Evil
Final Fantasy 7
Tenchu
G-Police
GTA
F1 97
Metal Gear
Medal Of Honor
Smack Down 2
Destruction Derby
Wipeout
Soul Reaver
Colony wars
Die hard
Syphon Filter
Colin Mcray
Fifa
Odd World
Driver
Warhawk
Silent Hill
Dino Crisis
Test Drive

As always, subscribe to the channel and watch out for more videos coming soon :)

Future Plans, and updates and such.

Well, it's been quite some time since I posted anything on here. My You Tube channel was inactive for quite some time, since feburary, but I've decided to continue making videos and uploading them, because I do honestly enjoy it. I know they're not the best game videos on you tube, but they're far from the worst too. So essentially I'm back!

Video making
As some of you may be aware, I've been trying to upgrade my PC lately to improve the video quality. I ordered a Geforce GTX 560 from Scan.co.uk. It seemed to not actually exist. I waited 2 weeks for it to arrive, and of course it never did. So I ordered one from Amazon, a Radeon 6870. That was faulty, it worked for like 2 hours, while it did it was incredibly loud, like ear piercing kind of loud, then when I restarted my pc, it just wouldn't recognise it, and kept trying to use the onboard video. It could also be my power supply I'm not sure which. I've decided to shelve this idea until I'm able to just build a whole new system, and start from scratch. Instead, once I receive a refund, I'm going to invest in an HD PVR and start to make videos for console games instead.

Upcoming Videos

From now on I'll be making reviews as and when I feel like it, but I'll only be uploading one a week, either Saturday or Sunday, depending on when I have videos ready. The next review I can confirm is definitley going to be "Mcdonald's Treasure Land" for the Mega Drive this video is finished and ready to go, but you'll have to wait until next week :p

After that. I plan on making a multi part series on grand theft auto series, going from the first game, to Grand Theft Auto 4. The first review in that series should be up the week after the mcdonald's video. But this reliant on me getting a working copy of the game, since I can't get either the free version off rockstars website to work, or my boxed cd rom copy. I will likely end up getting the Playstation version, and recording footage that way.
